Government at the local level

I know, I know. BORING. But hear me out. I have been a reporter for a local newspaper for about 6 years now. The paper serves the largest county in the state, and I am privileged to report on local cities' council meetings and other business. I know – BORING. But it's not. In fact, it's been educational. I really had no idea how important these meetings are, and I'm ashamed to say that I was one of those irresponsible citizens who never participated until I got this gig.

Government really does start at the local level, people. Local government is where you can have the most impact, the most influence. The most say. And isn't that all we're asking for in the end, a say in how other people spend the money that we're required to pay – BY THE GOVERNMENT? I have watched municipalities struggle through budget crises, manpower shortages and public indifference. It's tough, especially for the officials who take their jobs seriously.

Help 'em out, and go to a meeting. You might be surprised!

  1. It was pretty interesting to me too! I was embarrassed it took me so long to get to a council meeting, but I was glad I did. Now I am hooked :)
